 HAVANESE HEALTH

I am learning about his wonderful breed.  While they are charming and funny and delightful in almost every way (shredding gene aside), they have some health problems for which they need to be tested.  The list seems long, but in effect, Havanese breeders seem to be trying to eliminate or at least lessen the health problems to the maximum degree.  Health issues to be aware of include:  juvenile cataracts and other eye abnormalities (CERF); congenital deafness (BAER); patellar luxation (OFA); hip and/or elbow dysplasia (OFA); and, Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA).  Once a dog is cleared, he or she can be registered with CERF, BAER and OFA.

 

The Havanese Club of America is a great site to learn about these health issues, what steps to take and what tests are required and for lots of important information about the breed.
